This is a longitudinal study seeking to explain poverty in rural Bangladesh during the two decades between 1977 and 1997. More explicitly, the objective has been to delineate the processes within rural society which caused, aggravated, maintained and reduced poverty in a typical Bangladesh village during the above period. On both occasions, long drawn and painstaking fieldwork was undertaken within a holistic framework of analysis.

This report offers an approach to, and analysis of, rural poverty in Bangladesh which is clearly an alternative to much conventional thinking. It focuses specifically on the very poor rural majority and situates them within the wider social and political realities of the country. It is qualitative as well as quantitative and goes beyond the usual definitions and measurements of poverty to try to understand the processes and causes of impoverishment. Two sets of questions are tackled in particular.

There have been many explanations of the economic and social situation of Bangladesh fro the viewpoint of economics, resources, population growth, and to some extent from history. But this is the first time that people’s behavior has been shown as an important cause. Dr. Maloney does not deny the economic and demographic explanations. But he says that behavior is the raw material which produces these economic and social phenomena. Nobody has tried before to identify specific qualities of behavior that case persisting poverty in so large a part of the population.

This book gives names and faces to some of the world's poorest people, the inhabitants of a Bangladesh village. Although no microcosm can perfectly mirror the whole, an in depth exploration of one place can reveal the human dimensions of the larger picture. The authors lived at Katni, a typical Bangladesh village, in a hut they built themselves to find out what life at the margin in the Third World meant.

Purity and Communal Boundaries explores the rich complexities of a central Bangladeshi village, populated by Muslims, Hindus and Christians. Through a carefully constructed theoretical framework Sand Rozario demonstrates the ways in which class and communal domination reinforce gender inequality. The position of women is analysed in terms of linkages between religious values, sexuality, economics and politics. Rozario also examines the divergence between the demands of the economy and the system of values in Bengali society.

The Strong Women of Modhupur reviews the history of the Garo people of both India and Bangladesh since they were first encountered by the British more than two centuries ago. It describes the older Garo culture that is now remembered as "traditional", and it tells of the events that have affected the Garo of Bangladesh since the end of colonial rule. The book then turns to the life of the Garos of Modhupur, among whom the author has lived on several occasions since 1984.

This is a study of social organization, focusing on the symbolic construction of womanhood in Muslim peasant community in Bangladesh. In the patriarchal, patrilocal, patrilineal society of Bangladesh, socio-cultural values sanction segregation of sexes, impose strict gender division of labor and foster a systematic bias of male supremacy (Roushan Jahan, 1983). Marriage is also seen as an exchange for security by which women obtain protection in return for the opportunity providing the continuity of patrilines. Thus a woman is rendered transferable.
